Maths Mastery

At Chislet Primary School, we follow the mastery approach to mathematics. We strongly believe that everybody is a mathematician, and we make it our mission to prove this. We take a dynamic approach to the teaching of mathematics, constantly looking to improve our practice through working with the Kent and Medway Maths Hub, linking with other schools, and keeping up with the latest research.

What is ‘maths mastery’?

The National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics defines mastery as:

Mastering maths means pupils acquiring a deep, long-term, secure and adaptable understanding of the subject.

The phrase ‘teaching for mastery’ describes the elements of classroom practice and school organisation that combine to give pupils the best chances of mastering maths.

Achieving mastery means acquiring a solid enough understanding of the maths that’s been taught to enable pupils to move on to more advanced material.

White Rose Maths

To support the delivery of maths mastery, Chislet Primary School use White Rose Maths to guide the coverage throughout the year, offer resources, and supply assessment materials to help teachers monitor progress and address gaps.

Times Tables Rock Stars

Quick and efficient recall of times tables facts is an important factor in becoming an efficient mathematician. To support children in their learning of times tables facts, Chislet Primary School use Times Tables Rock Stars as a way to promote, motivate, and assess. It is a fun and engaging way to learn times tables. Visit the website to learn more.
